Today George Clifford has been eclipsed by his famous daughter, Anne, in popular consciousness but his exploits and achievements deserve to be better known.  The course therefore sets out to explore some of the feats of this multi-faceted man of action as we chart his life as a provincial landowner, a courtier and Queen Elizabeth’s Favourite, a Privateer, an inveterate gambler and ultimately one of the founding fathers of the British Empire.  Finally, we’ll examine the bitterness and discord he bequeathed to the Clifford family on his death.  Electronic copies of handouts will be supplied free of charge with paper copies at 10p per sheet being provided on request; also £8.30 for an optional tour of the Skipton Castle and visit to George Clifford’s tomb in Skipton Parish Church.
